When the winter winds begin to give way to the first hints of spring across Iowa's rolling landscape, the excitement starts building in Council Bluffs. The thundering hoofbeats, the roar of the crowd, and the unmistakable scent of arena dirt will soon fill the Mid America Center as the Council Bluffs PRCA Rodeo returns for another action-packed year on March 21-22, 2025.
The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association proudly sanctions this premier event, bringing the authentic spirit of the American West to the heartland. This isn't just any rodeo—it's an official stop on the road to rodeo glory, where competitors earn points toward qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo, the Super Bowl of the rodeo world.
"The Council Bluffs PRCA Rodeo has become a cornerstone event in our community," says a local organizing committee member. "We're proud to host a sanctioned event that showcases the incredible talent of these athletes while honoring our western heritage."
For two electrifying days, the Mid America Center transforms into a showcase of western excellence, where man, woman, and animal athletes demonstrate the skills, courage, and determination that define this uniquely American sport. The arena dirt tells stories of triumph and challenge, as competitors from across the nation converge to test their mettle against the clock and some of the most athletic livestock in the business.
The 2025 Council Bluffs PRCA Rodeo will feature all seven classic rodeo events, each offering its own brand of excitement and showcasing different skills rooted in the practical work of the American cowboy.
Bareback Riding will kick off the action, with cowboys spurring powerful bucking horses while holding on with just one hand to a rigging resembling a suitcase handle. Last year's champion, Jackson Lunn, scored an impressive 84 points on Big Bucks Rodeo's "What's Crackin'" to take home the title. Will he return to defend his crown?
In Steer Wrestling, also known as "bulldogging," athletes leap from horseback onto a running steer, using strength and technique to bring the animal to the ground. The 2024 competition saw a tie for first place between Ben Kilburg and Garrett Stevens, both clocking in at a lightning-fast 4.1 seconds.
Team Roping showcases precision teamwork as two mounted competitors—a header and a heeler—work together to rope a steer. The 2024 champions, Cody Reed and Clay Clayman, demonstrated perfect synchronization with a time of 4.4 seconds.
Saddle Bronc Riding, rodeo's classic event, combines strength, style, and rhythm as cowboys ride specially bred bucking horses. Cauy Masters claimed the 2024 title with an impressive 80-point ride on Big Bucks Rodeo's aptly named "Smokin' Hot."
Tie-Down Roping tests speed and accuracy as cowboys rope a calf, dismount, and tie three of the animal's legs together. Tom Crouse dominated this event last year with a time of 8.8 seconds.
The women of rodeo shine in Barrel Racing, where horse and rider navigate a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels at breakneck speeds. Alyssa Gabrielson's 13.56-second run earned her the top spot in 2024.
Finally, the night culminates with Bull Riding, often called "the most dangerous eight seconds in sports." Jesse Hopper conquered Big Bucks Rodeo's "Blackberry Smoke" for 80.5 points to win last year's event.
What makes rodeo unique among professional sports is the partnership between human and animal athletes. The 2025 Council Bluffs PRCA Rodeo will feature top-ranked cowboys and cowgirls from across the country, many following a rigorous circuit of events as they chase championship dreams.
The livestock—provided by the renowned Big Bucks Rodeo—are equally important to the competition. These specially bred animals are elite athletes in their own right, selected for their athletic ability and disposition. The stock contractor takes immense pride in their animals, ensuring they receive the best care before, during, and after each performance.
"These animals are the stars of the show," a representative from Big Bucks Rodeo explains. "We raise them from birth, and they're treated like the professional athletes they are. A good bucking horse or bull can be worth more than many of the trucks parked outside the arena."
While the competitive events form the heart of the rodeo, the Council Bluffs PRCA Rodeo delivers a complete entertainment package for fans of all ages.
The arena will come alive with the antics of professional rodeo clowns who serve the dual purpose of entertaining the crowd and protecting fallen cowboys as bullfighters. The 2025 event will feature skilled entertainers who bring humor and excitement between competitive events.
Special performances will punctuate the action, including trick riders demonstrating feats of balance and courage atop galloping horses. The arena will pulse with energy as announcers keep the crowd informed and entertained, all set to a soundtrack that captures the spirit of the West.
Families will find plenty to enjoy beyond the arena action. The rodeo typically includes activities designed specifically for younger fans, helping to pass the tradition of rodeo appreciation to the next generation.
